thumbsdown Steve McCollum - Place 6  thumbsdown

This time around McCollum has a record to run on.

Unfortunately it is not a very good record.

For whatever reason, he always puts the fatcat business interests before your interests.

He continues to work and vote against the people who put him on the council. The street tax charged on the water bill is the perfect example. Taxpayers want it removed in favor of 1/4 sales tax to fix our streets. McCollum wants to keep the street tax on the water bill in order to retain the sales tax to give to Cowboy Jones. Poor representation on his part. The street tax has been ruled illegal and he continues to waste our money appealing the judges ruling.

He has continuously voted to give tax abatements to businesses. Have you received a tax abatement? No, as a matter of fact your city taxes have climbed at the rate of 50% in the last ten years. And now they say the city is facing tough financial times. Fort Worth is right next door and they have reported a very bright financial future including a cut of one cent in this years tax rate.

He voted to change the Harris Crossing property zoning from commercial to residential. On the surface this appears to be just another 'ol zoning case, but in fact this one cost you a lot of tax dollars in "tough financial times". There is  a serious need for a commercial property tax base. That is the reason McCollum gives for granting all of those tax abatements. Yet he votes to remove the property from the commercial tax roll! Additionally, this property is a long way from anything and we, the taxpayer, get to pay millions to provide streets, water, sewer, parks, police and fire protection to starter homes that cannot pay their way in taxes.

So what is wrong with this picture? Poor management. Bad decisions. Misguided objectives. It is time to give someone else a chance to represent you and not a few business associates. This is your opportunity to get things right for the little guy.

City Council Place 6

From The Newspapers

Residents pay the $2 fee with their water bills, while businesses are charged based on their traffic volume. Scalf hopes to form a class action claim, stop the fee and force refunds of the $5 million the city has collected since the fee began in December 2000. Officials say a refund would be a severe blow to city coffers and could stall street repairs. "The city is totally, unnecessarily and unfairly exposed because of this," Councilman Steve McCollum said. "We are collecting money in what we think is the best way, and because of the fee this city now has an accelerated program of street maintenance that we never had in the past." McCollum, Ogle, Remington, and Odom think collecting taxes on the water bill for street repairs is the best way because they want to save the sales tax money for a poorly planned mass transit system and to give half a billion (plus) dollars to the infamous Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Self-aggrandizement is their motive! "The city is totally, unnecessarily and unfairly exposed" because these individuals want to structure the City's taxation to meet their personal agendas while disregarding basic services!
